GEOGRAPHY: Ukraine (Ukrayina) is a country in Eastern Europe. It lies at the northwest end of the Black Sea, with
Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland to the northwest, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania
to the south west and south, with Moldova in between.
POLITICS: Ukraine is a democracy under a semi-presidential system with separate legislative, executive, and
judicial branches. The President of Ukraine is elected by countrywide popular vote and is the head of the executive
branch. The Prime Minister is appointed by the 450-seat parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.
HISTORY: Human settlement in the territory of Ukraine has been documented into distant prehistory. The late
neolithic Trypillian culture flourished from ca. 4500 BC to 3000 BC.
Independence was achieved in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Ukraine was a founding member of
the Commonwealth of Independent States.
