
GEOGRAPHY: Macau is a city on the southern coast of China. It is located at the south of Guangdong Province, on the
tip of the peninsula formed by the Zhujiang (Pearl River) estuary on the east and the Xijiang (West River) on the west.
Macau is situated sixty kilometers west of Hong Kong and 145 kilometers southwest of Guangzhou, the capital of
Guangdong Province. It is immediately adjacent to the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone.
Macau's size has gradually increased as result of continued land reclamation, especially on Taipa and Coloane.
POLITICS: The status of Macau since reverting to People's Republic of China sovereignty on 20th December 1999 is
defined in the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law, Macau's constitution promulgated by China's
National People's Congress in 1993.
The chief executive is appointed by the People's Republic of China's central government[7]. Election of the Chief
Executive after election by an election committee, whose members are nominated by corporate and community bodies.
The chief executive's cabinet comprise five policy secretaries.
HISTORY: Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East.
Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special
Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two
systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high
degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.
