GEOGRAPHY: Southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam.
Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia and the thickly forested landscape consists mostly of rugged mountains,
the highest of which is Phou Bia at 9,242 feet (2,817 m), with some plains and plateaus. The climate is tropical and
characterised by monsoons.
POLITICS: The head of state is the President, elected by parliament for a five-year term. The head of government is
the prime minister, appointed by the president with parliamentary approval.
Laos adopted a new constitution in 1991. The following year, elections were held for a new 85-seat National Assembly
with members elected by secret ballot to 5-year terms.
HISTORY: Modern-day Laos has its roots in the ancient Lao kingdom of Lan Xang, established in the 14th Century
under King FA NGUM.
For three hundred years Lan Xang included large parts of present-day Cambodia and Thailand, as well as all of what is
now Laos. After centuries of gradual decline, Laos came under the control of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century
until the late 19th century when it became part of French Indochina.
